Minnesota was organized as a territory in 1849. An early event was the Indian Treaties at Traverse des Souix and Mendota in the summer of 1851. Waseca County was formed February 27, 1857 and was attached to Steele County for judicial and other purposes until August 12, 1858.
The village of Wilton was initially designated as the county seat. A decade later, the railroad bypassed Wilton, and the city of Waseca was established, becoming the county seat three years later, in 1870. That same year, a post office was established in New Richland, although the town wouldn't be organized until 1877.
The county seat of Waseca County is Waseca.
